  • What is an Endocannabinoid System (ECS)?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS), named after the cannabis plant that led to its discovery by Isreal chemist, Raphael Mechoulam. This is perhaps the most important physiological system in our bodies. The ECS is the body's complex cell system whose purpose is the keep the body in homeostasis: the stability of your internal environment The ECS components include endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Endocannabinoids are molecules made by all bodies that have a vertebrate, including your pet. Two main cannabinoids discovered, thus far, are anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglyerol. These endocannabinoids bind to the receptors, signaling to the ECS that help is needed. For example, endocannabinoids might target CB1 receptors (located in the brain and throughout the body) in a nerve to relieve pain. Others might bind to a CB2 receptor (found mostly in the immune and gastrointestinal systems) in your pets immune cells to signal that their body is experiencing swelling, a common sign of autoimmune disorders. Enzymes are responsible for breaking down endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks but the goal is always the same: homeostasis.
  • What does Cannabimimetic mean?
Cannabimimetic compounds have similar pharmacological effects to those of hemp and cannabis. They can aid the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and help keep the body in homeostasis. Cannabimimetic compounds are found in a number of plants: Echinacea, Black Pepper, and Rosemary to name a few. Our proprietary blend is derived from plant profiles from a number of species.
  • What is hemp?
Hemp has been a staple crop for over 10,000 years offering shelter, clothing, paper, and food. It has also been protecting those who consume it from many ailments. Feeding hemp to animals helped to ensure they could enjoy a healthy well balanced diet, especially for those in lean times who suffered financially and could not always provide a sufficient diet. Hemp is a cousin of the cannabis plant and many believe them to be one and the same, so much so that when marijuana became illegal, hemp was also deemed a narcotic. As laws changed hemp was again being harvested and many now appreciate the value of adding it to their own, and their pet's, daily diet. You can buy hemp from your local grocer in a variety of ways: powders, seeds, oil, and protein. FurBabies is proud to offer a healthy hemp derived product line, especilly with the treats which contain hemp hearts, hemp protein, and hemp oil.

  • What is MCT oil?
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride. Our MCT oil is derived from coconut oil and never palm oil. MCTs are more easily digested than longer-chain fatty acids found in many other foods. Unlike other fats, they go straight from the gut to the liver and turn into energy. Regular coconut oil is a LCT, Long Chain Triglyceride and contains unsaturated fats. We use MCT as this product, in itself, is very beneficial to animals. It is also one of the most shelf stable of all the oils, offering a shelf life of 2 years. Coconut oil has been found to: -increase energy -aid in digestion -improve skin conditions -reduce inflammation -help reduce allergic reaction -cab help with cognitive thinking
  • How much should I give my pet?
This is not a cookie-cutter type product and each animal will require its own unique dosage. The general rule for a starting dosage is 0.1mg per kg of dogs' weight or 0.2mg per kg of cats' weight. Each animals' system is different so figuring out the exact dosage for your pet may be tricky. This is why we start low and slowly raise the dosage until the desired effects are obtained. Some animals need more, while some need less. Finding the right balance is the key to a healthy and happy pet. The key is in finding your pets' "sweet spot", the optimum level for them.
  • How do I administer the oral drops?
The oral drops are faster acting if you can administer directly into your pets mouth. Alternatively, you can put it on their food but make sure the entire meal is ingested. If your pet is a “grazer” we highly recommend giving the drops directly into their mouth to ensure their full dose has been given. You can give twice a day, morning and evening, with or without food.
  • What time of day should I give my pet their dosage?
We recommend giving your pet two doses per day. Once in the morning and once in the evening, approximately 12 hours apart. You can give with or without food.
  • Why does my pet have diarrhea?
Sometimes the MCT (cocnut oil) proves to rich for some tummies. Stop giving the drops until the stool returns to normal, in 1-2 days, then resume. Rarely, an animal may have an allergy to the MCT oil. If the diarrhea continues, or your pet vomits, contact us and we can help.
  • What if my pet has an issue with weight gain, should I worry about MCT oil?"
If you are worried about weight gain our higher compound bottles would be a better option. A larger concentrated bottle requires less of a dosage so your pet will be recieving less of the MCT oil. Please contact us for further assistance.
  • My pet seems woozy and sleepy - is this normal?
Yes! Sleepiness is the most common side effect. This stems from the animal finally being pain free and needing to catch up on some necessary rest. Wooziness and being off balance can also occur. This, we have been told by vets, stems from the animal being suddenly pain free and not being sure why. They seem to be afraid to move in case the pain returns. The sudden pain free existence is scary for them, and can make them hesitant to move. These side effects should subside after a few days.
  • What are the ingredients in the oral drops?
The oral drops are made with MCT oil, all natural cannabimimetic oil, hemp oil, and non-allergenic organic flavourings contain no meat. That's it!
  • Do I have to change the oral drops dosage when adding treats?
No you don’t and we consider the treats a "booster". By adding treats along side the drops, the pet can remain pain/anxiety free for much longer periods.
  • Are the oral drops safe to take if my animal has allegies?
As long as there is not an allergy to MCT oil, you are in the clear! An MCT allergy will present as excessive diarrhea and/or vomiting.
  • Are there any interactions with other medications/pharmaceuticals?
There is one ringworm medication (ketoconazole) that seems to render the medication void. Other than this, there does not seem to be any other interactions. As this medicine becomes more widespread, this could change. However, our oil blend not only assists the endocannabinoid sytem, it can also open other pathways. If your pet is on pharmaceuticals, closely monitor them for side effects associated with that medicine as their dosage may need to be adjusted by your veterinarian. For those pet parents nervous of interactions, you can administer our drops 3-4 hours away from medications.
  • Do I need to adjust the dosage of pharmaceuticals when using the oral drops?
Our oil blend can open other pathways allowing the pharmaceuticals to work stronger. This means your pet may require less of the prescribed drugs. Always speak with your veterinarian before altering medications.
  • Will my pet get high?
No! Our proprietary oil blend does not contain any intoxicating components.
  • How soon will I see results?
Every animal is different so we can not answer this question directly. We have seen positive results in some pets with one dose, some in a few days, while others take longer. We rely on the pet parent to monitor and adjust the dosage accordingly. Our oil will aid the endocannabinoid system (ECS), whose sole purpose is to keep the body in homeostasis. The ECS is a self regulatory system and will deal with the worst issue first. Sometimes there may be an underlying issue that you are unaware of. For example - You are trying to help your limping pet and start with the drops. You don't see the results you were hoping for and have reached the daily maximum of 1mg per kg for dogs (2mg per kg for cats). Keep with it and eventually that limp will be helped as the ECS is working on another issue.
  • My dog only has anxiety during big events. How do I dost for that? For example: Halloween, car rides, and/or festivals."
If you know there is an event coming up and your pup will be anxious, start administering the oral drops 1-2 days before the event and keep administering until 1-2 days after. Although, we always recommend to continue using the drops as they are very beneficial to your animal.
  • I am not seeing the results I hoped for - why?
Every pet is different and requires different amounts of the drops. The key is finding the right dosage for your animal. This isn't a cookie-cutter remedy and you need to play with the level to find what will work best for your pet. Our oil will aid the endocannabinoid system (ECS), whose sole purpose is to keep the body in homeostasis. The ECS is a self-regulatory system and will deal with the worst issue first. Sometimes there may be an underlying issue that you are unaware of. For example - You are trying to help your pets limp and try our oil. You don't see the results you were hoping for and have reached the daily maximum of 1mg per kg for dogs (2mg per kg for cats). Keep with it and eventually that limp will be helped as the ECS is working on another issue.
  • I overdosed my dog by accident, what do I do?"
Don’t worry! It is not possible to overdose on our oil. If your animal has ingested a slightly higher amount than intended, they may just be a bit more sleepy than usual. It will subside after a good night's sleep. If a very large amount was ingested, the MCT oil may cause an issue. Severe diarrhea may develop and if this happens, consult your veterinarian as you'll want to make sure your pet doesn't become dehydrated.

  • Chaga Mushrooms for Dogs & Cats are they safe, I had heard they contain Xylitol ?
There is some concern on the use of Chaga mushrooms and pets due to the chance xylitol may be present.
